Panels are hard to shoot well because there is almost nothing to shoot. Four people sitting in chairs or perched on stools, talking. There is no spectacle to fall back on.
That is why so many panel streams are dull, and why the ones that are not are almost always a camera and cutting problem rather than a content problem.
Why most panel streams look bad
On a tight budget, a panel usually gets streamed as a single wide shot covering the whole stage. The camera never cuts. You never see anyone’s expression. Unless the moderator and panelists happen to be unusually dynamic, the stream feels flat for its entire length.
The conversation might be excellent. The stream still is not, because the viewer is watching from one fixed distance with no emphasis on who is speaking.
The camera plan for a four-person panel
In an ideal setup for four people on stage, we would run four to six cameras:
- A wide, held on the full stage and framed 100% of the time, so the technical director can cut to it at any moment and it never looks wrong
- A single on the moderator
- A two-shot or three-shot on the panelists
- One or two more dedicated to singles of individual panelists, able to pan between them as needed
The first one is the one people skip, and it is the one that makes the rest work.
Why the wide shot stays framed
The wide is the safety net, and it has to be usable at every moment of the show, not only when somebody remembers to reset it. If the wide is drifting, mid-adjustment, or hunting for a frame, the director loses the one shot they can always cut to. That is invariably the moment they need it.
The mic plan
Straightforward, and worth over-provisioning:
- At minimum, a lavalier per person
- Ideally a lav and a backup lav per person
- A wireless handheld on standby, in case something goes wrong
The handheld earns its place more often than you would expect. A dead lav on a panelist mid-answer is recoverable in seconds if there is a handheld ready, and not recoverable at all if there is not.
How you actually cut it
The rhythm is more predictable than it looks:
- Open on the wide
- The moderator starts talking and introduces the panel: cut to the moderator
- A panelist begins answering: cut to that panelist
- Cut back and forth between moderator and panelist as the exchange develops
- When panelists start talking to each other, the two-shot or three-shot carries it
- Return to the wide on transitions, then back into singles as the discussion resumes
The two-shot matters more than people assume. Once panelists start responding to one another rather than to the moderator, cutting between singles turns a conversation into a series of separate statements. The two-shot keeps it a conversation.
What good coverage does for the room, not just the stream
Done properly, the remote audience gets a better view than the people in the room. They see expressions and reactions at a size nobody past the fourth row can.
And if the cameras are already running, pairing the stream with IMAG (putting the program feed on screens in the room) lifts the quality of the in-person experience as well. The same rig serves both audiences, which is usually the argument that makes the camera count make sense.
Some of this you can run yourself. Some of it you shouldn’t.
